The next step is to compile our .NET code into a DLL assembly, including the TerraService.cs file we ve just generated: csc /t:library WebServiceExample.cs TerraService.cs For a normal .NET assembly not hosted in SQL Server, we wouldn t need to do any more than this. However, as we noted at the start of this example, for security reasons SQL Server assemblies aren t allowed to use the default dynamically generated XML serialization assembly, and we need to generate a static serialization assembly, by calling the command-line tool sgen.exe: sgen /a:WebServiceExample.dll The only option we need is /a, which indicates the name of the assembly we want to generate the XML serialization classes for. This generates a serialization assembly with the name WebServiceExample.XmlSerializers.dll. If you want to overwrite an existing serialization assembly, you can use the /f option to force sgen to overwrite an existing file; if this option isn t included and the file already exists, sgen will throw an error.

The Event Handlers design surface allows you to create programmatic reactions to specific package or task events. For example, if an error occurs within the package, you can use the Send Mail task to issue a warning to a particular user. Events are organized by executable (the package or other tasks/ containers). Each executable has its own event handlers, capturing errors, status changes, failures, and more. Let s take a look at an example whereby we add an event handler that will e-mail us when the package encounters an error. This example requires you to have a valid SMTP server on your network or on your local machine.

1. Create a new SSIS project and package. You ll add an event handler that will respond to any errors within the package. 2. In your new package, click the Event Handlers tab. 3. Under the Executable drop-down, select Package. Under the Event Handlers drop-down, select OnError. Click the Click here to create an OnError event handler for executable Package . A blank design surface (similar to the Control and Data Flow design surfaces) appears. 4. In the Connections area, right-click the surface and select New Connection. 5. In the Add SSIS Connection Manager dialog box, select SMTP and click Add. 6. In the SMTP Connection Manager Editor dialog box, type in the name of your SMTP server and click OK. 7. Drag a Send Mail task onto the Event Handlers design surface. 8. Double-click the Send Mail task. 9. In the General section, change the Name field text to Error Email and the Description field text to Emails on Package Errors (see Figure 14-20).
