For EJB 3, the most significant change is that entity beans have been replaced by POJOs (plain old Java objects) referred to now as entities that can be run outside an EJB container, and so require no special interfaces or EJB-specific code in the entity class itself. Session beans no longer require home or EJB-specific component interfaces, although they continue to logically support both remotable and non-remotable (ordinary) interfaces. Both of these changes, along with many others, are consistent with the new design philosophy of EJB 3, centered on a simplified development model.

The @ManyToMany annotation is assigned to a Collection relationship field to indicate that the target entity also has a Collection of the source entity type. This type of mapping requires an @JoinTable, commonly known as an intersection table. The join table holds references back to the primary keys of the entities at either end of the relationship. In the example that follows, the intersection table EJB_PROJ has two columns: EMP_ID is a reference column back to the ID primary key column on the EMPLOYEE table, and PROJ_ID is a reference column pointing to the ID primary key column on the PROJECT table.

One final positive side about the validator mechanisms is in its use for schema generation. If you are having your schema automatically generated, the validation framework will add the appropriate not-nulls, lengths, and so forth to it. Obviously, not all the validations will be there, because constraints such as @EmailChecks are not normal database checks.

Use of the (mappedBy="projects") attribute on @ManyToMany allows the mapping information contained in the @JoinTable annotation to be shared by both relationship fields.
