An Edge server is a peculiar beast that lives in a world of half-complete Active Directory and half-complete Exchange attached by an umbilical cord to its host Exchange organization. Of course, an Edge server is designed to live in a perimeter network, and it s critical to reduce the attack surface presented by the computer so that hackers can t gain access to valuable data by compromising the server. The only data that exist on the server are the mail queue database and the Active Directory Lightweight Directory Service (AD LDS) instance that contains the information synchronized from the host Exchange organization. These data are hashed, so they are of little use to an attacker, even if he gains access to AD LDS. All in all, the Edge server is a locked-down computer that functions more like an appliance than a general-purpose server.

Apart from the reduced set of prerequisites, installing an Edge server is very much like any other Exchange server role. An external firewall should protect the Edge server, and an internal firewall should isolate the Edge server from the hub transport servers that it connects to when it sends messages into the Exchange organization.
