We first spend some time discussing prototypical threats to software, and then discuss how to design security into applications from the beginning. We also illustrate the approaches, trade-offs, and security design principles using a concrete, running code example throughout this chapter and the next. While most security books only talk about these principles in the abstract, we present actual code examples for a simple, small web server, and show specifically how it can be exploited by an attacker if security design principles are not followed. The code is written in the Java programming language, but we explain each line of code such that programmers of any language should be able to understand how the principles apply in their favorite programming language.
