The Banners and Advertising modules (both of which use the mod_banners type) handle the presentation of banner campaigns created with the Banners component. In the component section, you ll learn how to set up and manage an advertising campaign through this system. For the actual banner display, the Banners module provides a number of options. Figure 7-8 shows the parameters that affect how the banner is rendered. The Count parameter determines the number of banners to be shown at once. The Banner client and Category parameters allow you to select the campaign that has been created in the Banners component interface. The Search By Tags parameter is a powerful option that matches the banner to the tags or keywords set up for the page or article content. Therefore, you can have baseball banners for pages set with baseball tag words and football banners for those set with football tags.

As Figure 7-11 shows, you can specify an expression between the parentheses when defining the table columns to be indexed. That means that instead of simply specifying a single column or a commaseparated list of columns, you can choose to specify a more complicated expression in an index definition. As the name implies, these types of images cannot be changed. Only immutable images can be used with the high-level API. That is, only immutable Image objects can be placed within an Alert, Choice, Form or ImageItem object. Because the high-level graphical display s refresh is determined by the system, having only immutable images associated with these components allows the system to update the display without notifying the application. Mutable Image objects are created in offscreen memory and are generally used in low-level GUI applications. There are several static createImage() methods on the Image class that can create immutable images from mutable images and vice-versa.

Since indexes are maintained by the Oracle DBMS, each table change is immediately propagated to the indexes. In other words, indexes are always up-to-date. However, if your tables incur continuous and heavy DML activity, you might want to consider rebuilding your indexes. Of course, you could simply drop them and then re-create them. However, using the ALTER INDEX ... REBUILD or ALTER INDEX ... COALESCE command is more efficient. Figure 7-12 shows the (partial) syntax diagram for the ALTER INDEX command.

Fonts A Font is used in the low-level API to set the font of any text that is drawn to the screen. The application does not have control of the font when using the high-level API. Unlike in larger systems, fonts cannot be created by the application. The application 90

The Breadcrumbs module (see Figure 7-10) show the organizational path within the web site where the currently viewed page is located. Breadcrumbs can be clicked to jump upward in the page hierarchy. Breadcrumbs are useful to more than just users since search engine spiders can more accurately navigate your web site if these are implemented.
