After you have created your master installation, you need to run the Sysprep utility with the Generalize option to remove information (such as event logs and unique SIDs) that is used only by the master computer. This process will leave the installation in a state suitable for capturing with ImageX and deploying to other computers. You can find Sysprep.exe in Windows Vista in the Windows\System32\Sysprep folder. You can run the tool graphically or from the command line. To choose the Generalize option from the user interface, select the Generalize check box, as shown in Figure 2-5. To select the Generalize option from the command line, use the /generalize switch. You will usually also want to select the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE) option because this selection brings up Windows Welcome on first boot after Sysprep is run. Windows Welcome enables users to customize the computer by creating a new administrator account, naming the computer, selecting a time zone, and performing other tasks. When you re creating partitions, make sure each partition gets unique data. Otherwise, it s easy to double-count values in multiple partitions. When you install Windows with a single-license product key, you have 30 days during which you must activate that installation of Windows. In this procedure, you delete the default partition, and then create three new partitions by using partition queries that filter data by date.

To boot the master computer in Windows PE, configure the boot order in the basic input/output system (BIOS) so that the computer starts from the CD/DVD-ROM drive.
