You need to enable this job in order for it to work. Otherwise the subscriptions will not be dropped even after the retention period has expired, and you will have to manually drop or reinitialize the subscription. If you look at the schedule properties, you will see that this job runs daily on the Publisher server. However, you can reinitialize subscriptions within 27 days, since the stored procedure retains the metadata for double the retention period, which in this case would be 28 days. After that time, it will clean up the metadata for push subscriptions. For pull subscriptions, however, you have to manually clean up the metadata. You can see the retention settings on the General page of the Publication Properties window, as shown in Figure 16-18. The subscription expiration settings shown in Figure 16-18 are the same as the retention period. Note that you do not have to clean out the metadata and can instead hold on to it permanently. This can be done by setting the @retention parameter to 0 for the sp_addmergepublication stored procedure. However, this may not be a good choice, since it will impede the performance of merge replication.

The retention period has a grace period of 24 hours to accommodate different time zones. Also, if you have a republishing topology, ensure that the retention period for the republishing server is less than or equal to that of the master publishing server. Otherwise, it might lead to nonconvergence. Finally, while you can change the retention period using the sp_changemergepublication stored procedure, you should reinitialize all the subscriptions for the publication in order to avoid any possible nonconvergence.
