What is PDF-417, Micro PDF-417, Macro PDF417

PDF417, or Portable Data File 417, is a two-dimensional (2D) stacked barcode symbology with multiple rows and columns and is capable of encoding over a kilobyte of data per label. It has high data capacity and commonly used in transport, inventory management, etc. Besides, PDF417 is also selected by the airline industry's Bar Coded Boarding Pass standard (BCBP) for paper boarding passes.

Macro PDF-417 barcode is a variant of PDF barcode, which provides a standard mechanism for creating a distributed representation of data files too large to be represented by set of single PDF417 symbols and contains additional control information in a zone called Macro PDF417 Control Block.

Micro PDF-417 barcode is multi-row symbology, derived from PDF-417 barcodes, which is designed for applications with a need for improved area efficiency but without the requirement for PDF417's maximum data capacity. Unlike PDF-417 barcode, Micro PDF-417 is only printed in certain defined combinations of rows, columns, and error correction codewords, up to a maximum of four data columns by 44 rows.

Developed as alpha-numeric 2D/Matrix barcode, PDF-417 is capable of encoding:

Text Compaction mode: ASCII value 0 - 255
Byte Compaction mode: ASCII value 9, 10, 13 & 32 - 127
Numeric Compaction mode: digits 0 - 9
PDF-417 maximum data characters: 1,726 characters (text), 1,033 characters (byte), 2,528 characters (number)
Marco PDF maximum data characters: up to 99,999 individual PDF417 symbols
Micro PDF-417 maximum data characters: 250 characters (text), 150 characters (byte), 336 characters (number)

PDF-417, Micro PDF-417 Structure & Format Mode (Symbol Sizes)

PDF-417 barcode often has 3-to-90 rows and 1-to-30 columns; however, Micro PDF417 image size is based on its column versions, namely one-, two-, three-, and four-column version Micro PDF417 with 4-to-44 rows.

Structure Append

Up to 99,999 individual PDF417 symbols may be used to encode data in Macro PDF417.

Up to 99,999 individual MicroPDF417 barcode images can be used to encode data in Structured Append.

Error Correction Level

PDF-417 error correction is based on Reed-Solomon algorithm, allowing the symbol to withstand some damage without causing loss of data. 8 levels of error correction are provided for different purposed and the recommended minimum level of ECL is level 2. From 0 to 8 ECL, 2 to 512 error correction codewords will be added to PDF-417 barcodes.
