What is GIF?
GIF or Graphics Interchange Format, is a bitmap image format developed based on the Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) lossless data compression technique to reduce the file size without degrading the visual quality. First introduced by CompuServe in 1987, GIF provided a color image format for their file downloading areas, replacing their earlier run-length encoding (RLE) format, which was black and white only at that time. As time goes, GIF has become popular because it used LZW data compression and since come into widespread usage on the World Wide Web due to its wide support and portability. Now, almost all the applications support GIF format.
The other feature of GIF is to store multiple images within one GIF files, which may produce simple animations if read & display those images on the screen one by one. GIF History
