What is GIF?

GIF or Graphics Interchange Format, is a bitmap image format developed based on the Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) lossless data compression technique to reduce the file size without degrading the visual quality. First introduced by CompuServe in 1987, GIF provided a color image format for their file downloading areas, replacing their earlier run-length encoding (RLE) format, which was black and white only at that time. As time goes, GIF has become popular because it used LZW data compression and since come into widespread usage on the World Wide Web due to its wide support and portability. Now, almost all the applications support GIF format.

The other feature of GIF is to store multiple images within one GIF files, which may produce simple animations if read & display those images on the screen one by one.

GIF History

In 1987, the first GIF occurred and the original version of the GIF format was called 87a.
In 1989, CompuServe provided an enhanced version called 89a - added support for animation delays, transparent background colors, and storage of application-specific metadata, incorporating text labels as text
GIF became one of the first two image formats commonly used on Web sites, the other is the black and white XBM.

GIF Usage

GIF format can be used in many files, such as:

Sharp-edged line art (such as logos) with a limited number of colors
Storing low-color sprite data for games
Producing small animations and low-resolution film clips and more
