Edge synchronization is the process that connects an Edge server with Active Directory so that hub transport servers in the site connected to the Edge server can replicate Active Directory information about the organization s messaging configuration to it. An Exchange 2010 Edge server can connect to an Exchange 2007 hub transport server and vice versa. The only issue that occurs when you connect mixed version servers is that the servers have to perform full synchronization each time they connect. Exchange 2010 servers are able to synchronize the delta changes that have occurred since the last synchronization, a change that reduces the demand on servers and networks. The cmdlets include New-SendConnector, New-ReceiveConnector, NewAcceptedDomain, and so on. You can still use the Get variants of these cmdlets to view configuration data on the Edge server, but you cannot create routing configuration objects any more.

Typically, the site that you select for this purpose is a hub or central site in terms of Active Directory replication and has good network connectivity with the Edge server through a firewall. The subscription request contains credentials to be used during the synchronization process as well as some other information required for synchronization, such as the TCP port to use, the public key for the Edge server s self-signed certificate, and some information about the server, including the version of Exchange that it runs. Creating the subscription request on the Edge server also creates an AD LDS account that s known as the bootstrap replication account (ESBRA). The Edge subscription request contains the credentials to allow synchronization to use the ESBRA to access AD LDS. The bootstrap account expires after 24 hours, so it is critical that you use the request to create the Edge subscription on the hub transport server within 24 hours of its generation. Otherwise, the ESBRA expires, the subscription request is no longer valid, and it will have to be regenerated.
